Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (hereinafter “AI”) and Supporting Technologies

Taking into account the policies of Elsevier and WAME regarding AI and guided by the provisions of the Law of Ukraine “On Academic Integrity” if a work generated by AI and supporting technologies is used in a publication, the author(s) must disclose this in the work, specifying the generation method and/or providing a reference to the relevant computer program or its description. At the same time, the unethical use of results generated by artificial intelligence is not permitted. If such facts are discovered, the editorial board will reject the publication.

The use of AI for journal publications is subject to certain conditions that must be followed by all participants in the publication process. Specifically, these rules apply exclusively to the preparation stage of the publication, namely the creation of its text. They do not cover the use of AI tools for data processing, obtaining scientific results based on this data during research, or for basic technical tasks such as checking spelling, grammar, or formatting references. The editorial board recommends that authors adhere to these Elsevier and WAME guidelines regarding AI.

However, when using AI, artificial intelligence tools and similar technologies may not be listed as authors or co-authors of a publication and are not considered a source of authorship. Authorship entails legal responsibility and the performance of functions inherent exclusively to humans. The use of AI is permitted solely for the purpose of enhancing text clarity, improving writing style, and ensuring linguistic accuracy. The application of AI technologies must be carried out under constant human supervision. The authors bear ultimate responsibility for the content of the work. They are obligated to carefully review and, if necessary, edit materials generated by AI, as these may contain errors, omissions, or biased judgments.

Disclosure of the use of AI and related technologies during manuscript preparation applies to the following cases:

  • the generation of text, data, or graphical materials;
  • making decisions that directly influenced the study results;
  • analyzing text, data, or images in ways that go beyond standard statistical methods;
  • other instances where AI and related technologies played a significant role.

If the use of AI is considered significant, authors are required to include a corresponding statement. This statement should be placed as a separate section at the end of the article, following the list of references. If AI was not used, such a statement is not required.

Section title: “Statement on the Use of Generated Artificial Intelligence and AI-Supported Technologies.”

Example

Statement: In preparing this publication, the author(s) used [NAME AND VERSION OF THE TOOL (INSTRUMENT/SERVICE)] for the purpose of [SPECIFY THE REASON, e.g., “to improve the style of presentation” or “to prepare a draft introduction”]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed, verified the facts, and edited the text as necessary, confirming their responsibility for the content of this publication.

Thus:

  1. The use of AI systems in the preparation of scientific publications involves:

− collecting, organizing, processing, and analyzing large volumes of data;

− searching for and analyzing relevant sources and publications on the research topic;

− preparing presentations of research results, including the creation of visual materials (schemes, diagrams, visual elements);

− compiling and organizing bibliographies;

− analyzing the novelty, similarities, and differences of scientific findings (propositions, hypotheses, concepts, models);

− checking scientific publications for plagiarism;

− other applications of AI systems that are appropriate to the specific nature of the research and do not violate the principles of scientific ethics and academic integrity.

  1. The use of AI systems in research activities should primarily serve to free researchers from routine tasks, thereby providing more time for complex and creative research endeavors.
  2. When using AI for scientific purposes, one should strive to maximize the benefits of the technology while simultaneously preventing potential risks and threats or minimizing their impact.
  3. Research results generated using AI systems must undergo thorough verification and include appropriate citations.
  4. AI systems cannot be recognized as authors or co-authors of scientific publications. The author(s) bear responsibility for the reliability, scientific novelty, and accuracy of the research results.
  5. It is prohibited to use AI systems to create fictitious sources, falsify research results, or generate non-existent experimental data.
  6. When preparing a scientific publication, it is mandatory to document the use of AI systems.
  7. When labeling content (images, text, graphs, charts, etc.) generated using AI systems, a corresponding citation must be provided.
  8. When using AI tools to formulate research questions, summarize results, or process and interpret data, the nature and extent of such use must be explained separately in the introduction of the publication, specifying exactly how these tools influenced the preparation of the study.

Failure to cite a work or part thereof that was produced using an AI system, as well as failure to include information in the bibliography of a scientific article regarding the use of AI, may be considered a form of academic misconduct.
